When you think of Canada as a whole in music, your first thought probably isn’t the brightest. Sure, we’ve got superstars like Drake and The Weeknd, but once you step past the mainstream, you find yourself wandering into the mist of non mainstream acts and suddenly you’re knee deep in a slop of very generic Toronto rap.
The same wannabe gangster flows, the fake toughness everyone tries to embody, all copy and pasted from the late great Houdini who was you could say "a genius in his own lane". However with the all the copy cats… we're not too fond of that!
But in the midst of all that debris and mishmash, there are tiny cracks of light in this "system of things". Artists who cut through the noise and represent what we like to call the real underground scene. With rappers like Katozai and others pushing this lane both sonically and visually, we want to highlight a few more artists specifically two from each standout region who really yell at us when it comes to that digital, raw, explosive, "underground-esque" sound that so much of today’s youth is gravitating toward.
“I’m not gonna lie, when it comes to Toronto rap and the weird stigma around it, there’s just so much garbage out here. We need to actually shout out the real good music that exists.”
An electrifying duo who stand out from most of Toronto’s scene. If you’re a fan of the old 16*29 dynamic Playboi Carti and Lil Uzi Vert had back in the day then you definitely won’t want to miss these two.
If you’re a fan of that loud, cacophonous, thunderous sound that TikTok has pushed into the spotlight with the obscure 808s, the chaotic textures and the playful melodys, look no further than Hunchovelly. A perfect blend of smooth vocals and explosive noise packed into one.
“What does Montreal have to offer? A surprisingly wide, split up mix of sounds, but here are two that definitely caught our ears.”
A distinct voice in the underground. He strays away from your typical underground wardrobe but brings refreshing, sharp flows that fans of Nino Paid or Veeze will gravitate toward.
If you’re in tune with the very core of underground madness, you’ll love Milo’s sound. Static filled, strange, otherworldly, in some cases even weird and very Izaya Tiji coded.
“You’d think there’s nothing out here in this empty ass city, but like all good things, you’ve gotta actually look for it.”
One of if not thee most versatile artist on this list. Catchy flows and melodies, and he’s not afraid to hop on anything: new jazz, pluggnb, rage, you name it. You’ll love what he brings to the table.
Addicting cadences, great delivery, One of the most upcoming and promising talents from this region that would come off as different and is supposedly changing the sound as we speak. He self-produces most of his music. A seriously solid all around artist.
That’s all we’ve got for now. Canada still has so many hidden gems waiting to be uncovered. Through all the dust and chaos, we manage to spot a few clear flashes of brilliance and it’s only right we shine some light on them.
Definitely let us know what you think about these artists, and whether any of them have the potential to take over the underground scene in the next few years!
