It’s been a little over a month since U.Y Scuti dropped, and by now, most people have had time to sit with it and kinda soak in its sound, and really get a feel for what Thug was aiming for. Personally speaking strictly as a fan and at a consumer standpoint I’d say it wasn’t quite the grand comeback we were all hoping for, but it definitely wasn’t a bad album either.
Yes, Thug delivered plenty of the hard hitting flows, fiery energy, and realistic authentic delivery that we’ve come to expect from him. But at the same time, a few tracks felt a bit off either rushed, experimental in a way that didn’t fully land, or simply putted: not the version of Thug we thought we’d get after all the anticipation.
One thing I genuinely appreciate though, is how Thug continues to bridge generations in the rap scene. He’s giving newer artists some well deserved shine like for example: Ken Carson, who’s signed to Playboi Carti’s OPIUM label, as well as 1300Saint, a young talented artist under Thug’s own label: YSL. We also got to see the return of Lil Gotit, brother of the late Lil Keed (rest in peace) on the same song surprisingly alongside big names like Cardi B, Lil Baby, and others who brought their own spark to the project.
All in all, U.Y Scuti still packs some great songs and sharp flows. I think we can all agree that we wanted a bit more of that classic Thug energy mixed in with his current vocal ability like how he demonstrated on his disstrack: "Closing Arguments" Still, it’s clear he’s channeling and forming a lot of emotion and introspection into his music right now, and honestly, I hope he fuels and turns those feelings into fire on whatever comes next.
